Tjunkiya Napaltjarri (c.1930 - 2009) lived her life in the Western Deserts of Central Australia. Napaltjarri began painting for Papunya Tula Artists in the late 1990s until her death in 2009. A leading artist in the Australian First Nations art movement, Napaltjarri’s paintings can be found in national and international collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia and the Musee du Quai Branly, Paris.

Napaltjarri has a striking uniqueness in her paint application depicting her Country. Her approach leads her to ‘scratch’ through lush pigment layers as a way to reveal the under-colours and forms, a method unique. For collectors of First Nations art and Dreamtime stories, Umari is an inviting find.
