"My family spent nine months in Kolkata, India over 2024 and 2025. Kolkata is a vibrant, bustling city that is full of life, culture, and history. While I was attending school and my mom was leading countless workshops and teaching, my dad had a lot of time to explore. Being in Kolkata both this time and last time (my family was also in Kolkata for seven months in 2019) were the only times in my dad’s adult life when he didn’t have to work. From my perspective, he used this time and freedom to amplify his creativity and combine it with the excitement that was bursting off of the busy streets.

My dad was constantly recording anything he found interesting, from the back of an auto rickshaw as we rode home from school to officials at my soccer tournament and pretty much anything in between. The song KSOM is very much a representation of the exuberant, competing sounds of Kolkata that still somehow create a harmony completely unique to the city.

The other songs on the album show the many other sides of the city. There, you can walk down one lane and be surrounded by brand new malls and shiny skyscrapers, and then turn down the next and be in the heart of a calm and peaceful neighborhood with its decades old colorful buildings and neighbors who all know each other and which of the street cats they like to feed. This record shows all the parts of Kolkata we witnessed, from the calm, slow melodies of the early morning markets, to almost getting hit by a bus while walking to school. Our experiences, and every person's experiences in the city, are all very different, but we are all united by the many ways in which living in Kolkata can remind you of all the most important, devastating, joyful, and beautiful things in life, all in one walk home from the market.
